Let’s talk about ‘comparison’. A comparison is key, yet often toxic. Without comparing yourself to where you were to where you are you would lack motivation, drive and willpower. But comparing yourself to others is toxic. We are all guilty of it, we all know it isn’t the done thing but for some reason we, “can’t help ourselves”. Guys do it much more than you think ladies, they are just less likely to admit it.

Over the past few years, social media has soared. Life has adapted and the internet is booming more than ever. I see it’s constant development as such an exciting prospect. I am however cautious that people are viewing the ‘online world’ as a negative place to be. In my eyes the internet is a ‘thing’ it exists, so do many other things. It’s not so much the ‘thing’ that is the issue it is the WAY people use it. If you choose to follow certain types of accounts online that is YOU manually choosing what content you would like to consume on a daily basis. This is where the road to comparison begins.

It’s amazing to have people that inspire you and make you want the best for yourself. But it isn’t healthy for you to sit and consume hours of content comparing yourself to other people, posting your own content for others approval and comparing your ‘position’ in society.

I am a firm believer in everyone is running their own race. You might go on a talent show at 15, be all over national television and then become a performer. But that story slows down by the time that person is on their way to 30. On the flip side, one of my favourite examples: Simon Cowell, broke at 33 on his parent’s sofa and now look… a man who’s in a position that is going from strength to strength.

“Don’t let other peoples stories influence the way you look at your own”.

We are our worst enemy when it comes to comparison. We are the only ones that can get full control over our thoughts and actions. It’s taken me till I was 25 to even figure this out. I wish someone had sat me down years ago and explained it to me. From 18-25 while starting out in the entertainment industry I have only been taught comparison – Why ‘him, him and him’ are getting the jobs and I am not. The cutthroat way of auditions and castings have previously led me to ultimately want me to trade lives with others for their ‘qualities’ that have been so commercially viable. And then the penny dropped.

About a year ago the theory of ‘no one else can be you, there is only one of you and you can do whatever you want’ suddenly all made sense. Those are words people have said forever, but I obviously wasn’t ready to understand that. I’m not beating myself up about it – its obviously part of my story and everything happens for a reason (even if it doesn’t feel like it at the time). You have to trust your story, trust the process and enjoy it for what it is. If every single thing didn’t happen to you the way it did – you wouldn’t be where you are today.

Remind yourself of the long game. The long game is the only game that is won. Short term wins and losses come and go. Learn about yourself, develop your strengths and weaknesses. Push yourself out of your comfort zone because that’s when the magic starts to happen. There are no ‘rules or regulations’ to achieving what you want. Only you and your ability to take control of your mind and push yourself. Don’t waste any more time comparing yourself to someone else. Please.

The Motivation Rollercoaster

It’s a ride we have no choice but to opt into. Very few people if any are capable of maintaining 100% motivation 7 days a week. We are just not wired that way, despite knowing that we punish ourselves every day for a lack of motivation. When it comes to being motivated every single person is different. What fires me up, might make you bored or fall asleep – the first part of all of this is self-awareness.

Knowing where you want to go is one thing, but having the motivation to achieve your goal when everything is ‘comfortable, easy, means you get time off, is manageable’ can feel like the impossible. I think it is important to listen to your body and also your mind. Yes, you do need to push yourself because great things come when you manage to step outside your comfort zone.

But on the flip side, to maintain motivation you will want to start seeing results from your work to maintain those aspirations. So you are going to need downtime. Some of you might only need a minute but others may need longer. I am one of those people. I work until 11pm every single day so the theory of ‘waking up at 5:30 will change your life’ is not relevant for me. I mean… It will change my life, it’ll turn me into The Grinch. So you need to ensure you measure your motivation levels as an accurate reflection of your lifestyle. There is not one rule to fix all motivation. Here are 3 key things I’ll leave you with to think about to try and work, to help you smoothen out that motivation rollercoaster.

  1. Healthy Body = Healthy Mind

Regular exercise and a healthy diet will work wonders in creating a positive mindset. A positive mindset will allow you to become motivated and actually put in effective working hours that will produce real results. You don’t have to be a bodybuilder and count your food macros, but get yourself moving for an hour a day to edge yourself out of your comfort zone. Fuel your body with a well-balanced diet and let the endorphins discover your motivation.

2. Understand

What? Well… You need to understand the process of getting to where you want to be. I previously wrote the article ‘Achieve You’ where I talk all about understanding the process of achieving a goal. It is very simplistic and is relevant to everyone wanting to achieve anything. If you don’t understand the process your motivation levels will fluctuate constantly because you will begin playing unnecessary mind games with yourself.

3. Remember Why You Set Out

So it’s all going well, you have had an extremely productive few weeks on the way to achieving your goal. Great. Suddenly you peak, and you start making excuses and you run back within your comfort zone. We are all guilty of that! This is the point where motivation is at the lowest and is the hardest turning point on your Motivational Rollercoaster. Re-connect properly with how you felt on those first few days of realising what you wanted to you, but most importantly WHY? Why did you want to achieve that? Re-connect with those feelings, aspirations, and motivation to trust yourself. Plus, you have to enjoy the process because… it’s a long one. This whole journey I am on has changed drastically almost every single month. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t, that is just part of my rollercoaster. Trust the journey, trust yourself and trust the process. It’s going to happen. It has to.

Make this week count – remember… This week will never happen again!

We all have an idea of where we want to be heading. We all have people and ideas that motivate us – keeping us on the straight and narrow to achieve that ‘goal’. The biggest problem I have faced is a lack of self-awareness. I find it all too easy to follow a random to-do list and just think I’m doing the right thing in the moment. The issue with that is time passes by and you feel like you are still in the same place. Getting stuck in that rut is what causes sparks of anxiety and potentially mild depression, leaving your mind in a place that doesn’t help you move forwards and motivation can drop off.

  1. How do I go about achieving my goals? In quite a simplistic way – the theory is the simple part, it’s always a question of ‘can I follow these steps through?’. The way I work it all out is: I write down on a sheet of plain paper ‘I am here’ on one side and ‘I want to be here’ – join the two together with a line. Then work backward from your goal to where you are today. This will create a list of things you need to do to get where you want to be. The next part is self-explanatory. Just follow the steps you have just written for yourself. Keep that piece of paper, keep referencing it because this will keep your progress in perspective. It doesn’t have to be 10000 steps long, but it will help your mind understand the path you are walking down, and each time you tick off one of those steps you will realise you ARE on the right path and you are a step closer to where you want to be. It is then just a matter of time. You will get there, you will achieve it – whatever it may be. If you don’t you’ll die trying and then you won’t know anyway. Either way, you will achieve that goal. You will hit that target and you will get to where you want to be.

  2. The only person standing in your way is YOU and your own mind. Take time to invest in yourself, understand what you are capable of and the best way for you to work – that’s going to reduce the time it takes you to tick off those bits you need to do to achieve your goal. Something I have realised recently is how powerful my mind can be. We are wired to make up excuses and I am extremely guilty of that. You can talk yourself out of the smallest of tasks in seconds. So stop. Take control, take ownership of your thoughts and help yourself by setting that little negative voice inside your head to one side. The more you learn that the more you will grow and develop.

  3. The third thing you need to keep in mind is; knowing your worth. If you are keen and eager to achieve something you will meet people along the way who are ready to exploit your hard work, dedication, and talent for their own financial gain. You can create your own standards, determine the value of your work and determine how you should be treated by others. Of course, this ties in with keeping things in perspective as something is only worth what someone else is prepared to pay for it. Be optimistic about your plan but keep everything in perspective with a hint of realism. The more real you are with yourself the faster you will develop. If you set an unrealistic goal and you don’t achieve it you begin putting pressure on yourself that didn’t even exist in the first place.

  4. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. And I mean anyone! I have had teachers, family, partners, friends and colleagues all tell me ‘you can’t’. “Ollie that just doesn’t happen”, “yes but Ollie how are you ACTUALLY going to do that”, “Ollie that’s too much of a saturated market” etc…. The list goes on. But what I think every time I hear something like that is “yes, but I haven’t done that, I haven’t tried that, people haven’t heard what I have to say and people haven’t seen my take on that”. If someone says you can’t be a comedian – take your phone and record a set and post it online – bam! You are a comedian. If someone says you can’t be a model – take photos of yourself with others and post them. BAM – you are modeling. Do you see where I am coming from? The internet gives you a whole world of opportunity right at your fingertips – it’s up to you how you use it and what you can make of it. Remember some of the biggest artists and personalities we know of today were found online!
