It’s a ride we have no choice but to opt into. Very few people if any are capable of maintaining 100% motivation 7 days a week. We are just not wired that way, despite knowing that we punish ourselves every day for a lack of motivation. When it comes to being motivated every single person is different. What fires me up, might make you bored or fall asleep – the first part of all of this is self-awareness.
Knowing where you want to go is one thing, but having the motivation to achieve your goal when everything is ‘comfortable, easy, means you get time off, is manageable’ can feel like the impossible. I think it is important to listen to your body and also your mind. Yes, you do need to push yourself because great things come when you manage to step outside your comfort zone.
But on the flip side, to maintain motivation you will want to start seeing results from your work to maintain those aspirations. So you are going to need downtime. Some of you might only need a minute but others may need longer. I am one of those people. I work until 11pm every single day so the theory of ‘waking up at 5:30 will change your life’ is not relevant for me. I mean… It will change my life, it’ll turn me into The Grinch. So you need to ensure you measure your motivation levels as an accurate reflection of your lifestyle. There is not one rule to fix all motivation. Here are 3 key things I’ll leave you with to think about to try and work, to help you smoothen out that motivation rollercoaster.
- Healthy Body = Healthy Mind
Regular exercise and a healthy diet will work wonders in creating a positive mindset. A positive mindset will allow you to become motivated and actually put in effective working hours that will produce real results. You don’t have to be a bodybuilder and count your food macros, but get yourself moving for an hour a day to edge yourself out of your comfort zone. Fuel your body with a well-balanced diet and let the endorphins discover your motivation.
What? Well… You need to understand the process of getting to where you want to be. I previously wrote the article ‘Achieve You’ where I talk all about understanding the process of achieving a goal. It is very simplistic and is relevant to everyone wanting to achieve anything. If you don’t understand the process your motivation levels will fluctuate constantly because you will begin playing unnecessary mind games with yourself.
3. Remember Why You Set Out
So it’s all going well, you have had an extremely productive few weeks on the way to achieving your goal. Great. Suddenly you peak, and you start making excuses and you run back within your comfort zone. We are all guilty of that! This is the point where motivation is at the lowest and is the hardest turning point on your Motivational Rollercoaster. Re-connect properly with how you felt on those first few days of realising what you wanted to you, but most importantly WHY? Why did you want to achieve that? Re-connect with those feelings, aspirations, and motivation to trust yourself. Plus, you have to enjoy the process because… it’s a long one. This whole journey I am on has changed drastically almost every single month. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t, that is just part of my rollercoaster. Trust the journey, trust yourself and trust the process. It’s going to happen. It has to.
